Oxford Park

The walk into Oxford Park takes you down a proper Devon lane, all overhanging branches and damp earth, before the reserve opens out into something quietly special. It's a nature reserve rather than a manicured park - rough grassland, woodland patches, and a stream that winds through the lot. You won't find playground equipment or tea kiosks; this is the real thing, managed for wildlife rather than visitor convenience.

Birders come here serious about it. The woodland attracts nuthatches and great spotted woodpeckers, especially in the quieter months. The open areas pull in yellowhammers and skylarks if you're up early. Families with patient kids who actually enjoy looking for things will get something out of a couple of hours poking about, though restless toddlers might find it a bit slow. Walkers appreciate it as a way to kill time between bigger outings - the paths are easy enough, nothing steep, and it sits handily between Ilfracombe and the touring parks inland.

Get there early or late afternoon if you want any chance of seeing something move. Summer weekends it gets busy with locals, which naturally means fewer birds. Bring binoculars if you've got them. There's no visitor centre, no entrance fee that we could pin down - it feels like one of those places that just exists and people drift through. Free admission is likely, but check locally before you go.

If you're based at Hele Valley Holiday Park or Newberry Valley just up the road, it's worth an afternoon wander. Don't expect a destination on its own merits - think of it as a decent nature spot that justifies a detour when you're already in the area.
