Oxclose Wood

Walking into Oxclose Wood near Mansfield, you're straight into proper ancient woodland - the kind where the canopy blocks out half the sky and the ground squelches underfoot even when it hasn't rained for days. It's a working woodland with character, not some manicured nature reserve. The paths wind through a mix of oak and birch, and if you time it right, you'll spot bluebells carpeting the forest floor come spring.

Historically, this land's been worked for centuries - you can still see signs of old coppicing and timber management if you know what to look for. It's the sort of place where you genuinely feel like you've stepped back a few hundred years, minus the actual peril.

Walkers will get the most from Oxclose. It's not dramatic or showy - there's no waterfall or ancient ruin to photograph - but it's exactly what you need if you're after a proper forest walk without the crowds. Two hours here, maybe three if you meander. Take the family if the kids are old enough to manage woodland paths without constant entertainment, but this isn't a destination visit on its own.

Given its proximity to Sherwood Pines Camping just six miles away, it works well as a half-day outing while you're in the area. You could easily combine it with Sherwood Forest itself if you want something with more visitor infrastructure. Oxclose is free and feels genuinely untouched - worth the short drive from Mansfield if you're after quiet woodland rather than spectacle.
