Ouzel Valley Park

The Ouzel Valley is a proper slice of countryside that catches most people off guard - especially if they've only seen Milton Keynes' concrete side. This nature reserve follows the River Ouzel as it meanders through woodland and grassland, and the walking here is genuinely lovely without being strenuous. You'll spot wildfowl on the water, maybe a heron if you're lucky, and the trees create decent shade even in summer.

It's ideal for families who want to burn off some energy without leaving the immediate area. Toddlers might struggle with muddy stretches after rain, but older kids and proper walkers will find it absorbing. The reserve works particularly well if you're camped at Gullivers Campsite or Adventurer's Village - both are less than a mile away, making it a natural morning or evening wander. If you're staying further out at The Old Dairy Farm, it's still worth the short drive.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared. The paths wind through about two miles of decent terrain, and you can easily spend an hour here without feeling rushed. Spring and autumn are best - summer gets muggy, and winter muddy. It's the sort of place that rewards a proper look rather than a quick snap for Instagram. Free access, naturally, and you won't need to book anything. Not dramatic, but genuinely restorative.
