Outer Purfleet

The Outer Purfleet is a proper piece of Norfolk's maritime heritage, lurking along the riverbank east of King's Lynn where the Great Ouse opens out towards the Wash. It's essentially the remains of a 17th-century fortification - earthwork defences built to protect the port from unwanted visitors during a time when England took its river security quite seriously. What you're looking at today is mostly banks and ditches rather than dramatic ruins, but that's actually part of the appeal if you like reading the landscape.

This is one for history buffs and walkers rather than those after instant gratification. There's no visitor centre, no interpretive boards spelling everything out - you need to bring a bit of curiosity. Fifteen minutes wandering around gives you the gist; half an hour if you're properly engaged. The setting itself is the real draw: flat Norfolk marshland with willows, the river's industrial history visible in old structures, and genuine peace and quiet.

The site is free to access and you can visit any time - it's open ground. Best in dry weather, obviously, as it can get boggy. If you're staying at Kings Lynn Caravan & Camping Park just down the road, it's an easy addition to a morning's exploring. Pair it with a walk along the riverside path toward the Wash, or combine it with Sandringham Camping and Caravanning Club Site's broader location for a bigger day out. Not a destination in itself, but worthwhile if you're in the area and enjoy understated Norfolk history.
