Our Lady Star of the Sea

The seafront at Porthcawl doesn't shout about its church - it's easy to walk past the modest stone building tucked away from the main drag. Our Lady Star of the Sea sits quietly on the edge of town, a working Catholic place of worship that's been there since the 1880s. It's not the sort of spot that'll eat up hours of your day, but if you're staying at Trecco Bay or spending time around the beach, it's worth a quick look.

The building itself is functional rather than fancy - red sandstone, some decent stained glass if the light's right. The real pull is the location and what it says about Porthcawl's history as a proper Victorian resort town. Walkers and history types will appreciate the context more than casual day-trippers. You'll be in and out in fifteen minutes, which slots nicely into a morning walk before heading to the beach or grabbing lunch.

It's free to pop in (this isn't a ticketed attraction), though it's obviously a working church so visiting during quiet hours shows respect. Check service times if you're curious - they're the best windows for a proper look around. The seafront walk here is gentle and the views across the beach are the real draw anyway. If you're basing yourself at Trecco Bay for a week, it's a nice addition to the circuit rather than a reason to come to Porthcawl on its own.
