Our Lady of the Waves

The whitewashed church sits right on the edge of Dunbar's seafront, impossible to miss with its bright modern lines against the grey Scottish sky. Our Lady of the Waves is a Catholic chapel built in the 1950s - functional rather than fancy, but there's something honest about that. The real draw is the location. You're standing at the water's edge with views across the Firth of Forth, and on a clear day you can see right across to Fife. It's the kind of spot that makes you stop mid-walk and actually notice where you are.

Inside, it's small and straightforward - a working parish church, not a tourist attraction in the traditional sense. The appeal is purely the setting. Walkers doing the coastal path will stumble upon it naturally, and it makes a good reason to pause and take in the seascape. Families based at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park just down the road could easily incorporate it into a seaside walk without adding much time to their day.

There's no entry fee and no set hours - it's a functioning church, so visiting is respectful attendance rather than touristic browsing. Go early morning or late afternoon when Dunbar's busier spots have quietened down. In decent weather it's a lovely five-minute detour from the harbour walk. In Scottish drizzle it's less compelling, but that's true of most seaside churches. The real magic here is the marriage of religious space and raw coastal landscape - not everyone's thing, but worth knowing about if you're in the area.
