Oughtonhead Common

The commons around Hitchin are proper Hertfordshire - rolling chalk grassland, scattered woodland, and paths that feel older than the maps. Oughtonhead Common is one of the best bits, a nature reserve where you can actually see why people bothered to preserve it rather than just chuck houses up. The chalk streams running through are the draw - clear water, fast-flowing, nothing like the sluggish stuff you get elsewhere in the county. Dragonflies in summer. Watercress beds in places. On a decent day you can walk for hours without hitting a fence or a "Keep Out" sign, which frankly is rarer than it should be.

Walkers will have the best time here. The paths are decent and the terrain isn't punishing - rolling rather than steep - making it solid for a ramble before or after a park stay at Radwell Lake or Baldock Park Homes, both within five miles. Families with younger kids might find an hour or so enough before they get fidgety; there's not a massive focal point like a lake or a tower, just grassland and streams. Bird spotters and wildflower types will genuinely rate it though. Spring and early summer are obviously peak, when the chalk grassland flowers actually show up.

It's free to access - common land after all - and parking is straightforward. Allow two to three hours for a proper walk, or forty minutes if you just want to dip in and out. Close to Hitchin town if you need a coffee or a bun afterwards.
