Orthodox Church of the Ascension

The Orthodox Church of the Ascension sits quietly on the Northamptonshire border near Lutterworth, and it's genuinely unusual for the East Midlands. You won't find many Byzantine domes round here. The church itself is a striking red-brick building with proper Eastern Orthodox styling - all cupolas and crosses that look rather out of place against the English countryside, which is precisely why it's worth a stop.

Inside, the iconography and religious artwork reflect a real Orthodox tradition, though visiting hours can be hit-and-miss so it's worth ringing ahead or checking locally. The whole experience takes maybe 20 to 30 minutes unless you're particularly interested in Orthodox theology or ecclesiastical architecture, in which case you could spend longer. It's the kind of place that appeals to history buffs and architecture enthusiasts rather than young children - there's not much interaction or activity to hold their attention.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Manor Farm is just three miles away, or Meadow Field's glamping offers a bit more comfort - this makes an easy afternoon diversion. It's free to visit, assuming you can get in, and works well paired with Stanford Hall just a few miles further on if you want to make a proper outing of it. Don't expect queues or crowds. That's rather the point.
