Old Ship

There's not much left of the Old Ship, to be honest. What you're looking at in Downpatrick is a 17th-century vessel that's been deliberately preserved in the earth rather than carted off to a museum somewhere. It's an archaeological site more than a traditional attraction - the kind of place where you need to use your imagination a bit.

The ship itself sits in what was once a tidal inlet, abandoned and left to rot into the landscape. It's genuinely interesting if you're into maritime history or the practical side of how people lived and worked centuries ago. Kids under ten might find it underwhelming - there's not much to actually interact with - but older children studying history, or adults with a real interest in archaeology, will get something out of it.

Downpatrick's the obvious base, and it's got enough going on to make a full day worthwhile. Delamont Country Park sits just 2.7 miles away and offers proper walking if the Old Ship leaves you wanting more. Castle Ward, another five miles on, is exceptional if you've got the time - genuinely one of the better spots in the area.

There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no fancy setup. It's outdoors, it's free, and you can turn up whenever suits you. Allow half an hour, maybe forty minutes if you're taking photos or reading the interpretive panels. Best in dry weather - it gets muddy otherwise.
