Old Plantation

The woodland at Old Plantation, just outside Wantage, is proper woodland - the sort where you actually feel like you've stepped away from things. It's managed forest rather than wild rambling, which means decent paths and a genuine sense of order, but it doesn't feel manicured to death.

You're looking at a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees, depending on which sections you explore. Spring's absolutely worth timing a visit for - bluebells carpet the floor and the whole thing feels alive. Summer's thick and green, autumn's predictably gorgeous if you like that sort of thing.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a quick twenty-minute stroll - you can easily spend two hours picking your way through without rushing. Families with younger kids might find it a bit repetitive after an hour, unless they're the type who genuinely enjoy spotting birds or climbing on fallen logs. History buffs won't find much here - it's nature rather than narrative.

The nearest town, Wantage, is close enough that this works well as a morning or afternoon slot during a longer stay. If you're camping at Lorne Hill Farm just down the road, it's the sort of place to break up the day without too much faff. No facilities to speak of, so bring water and don't expect loos. Free access, as far as forest walks tend to be. Go midweek if you value quiet.
