Old Park Wood

Walk into Old Park Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper old-growth forest - the kind where the canopy is so thick you'll lose track of time within minutes. It's a genuine woodland experience rather than a manicured nature reserve, with uneven paths threading through dense beech and oak, moss coating everything, and that earthy smell that makes you remember why forests matter.

The wood sits just inland from Dover, making it an excellent half-day break if you're staying at one of the local holiday parks like Parkdean Resorts St Margaret's Bay or Kingsdown Camping. It's the sort of place that works brilliantly for families wanting to let kids loose among the trees, and equally good for anyone after a proper walk without the crowds you'd get at more famous Kent beauty spots.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is part of its charm - it feels like actual woodland, not a packaged experience. Bring a map if you're not confident with navigation; paths can get confusing in places. Allow 45 minutes to two hours depending on how lost you're willing to get. Free admission, naturally.

Go on a dry day after a spell of decent weather. Post-rain it's boggy and frustrating rather than atmospheric. Spring and autumn are best - winter gets gloomy, and summer brings the midges out in force. It's worth the detour if you're in the area and need somewhere genuine, but it's not a destination in itself.
