Old Madeley Manor

The ruins of Old Madeley Manor sit quietly on the edge of Crewe, easy to miss if you're not looking for them. What remains is essentially a substantial stone foundation and partial walls - enough to get a sense of the Tudor-era layout, but not so much that you'll spend hours here. The structure itself is quite plain, more honest ruin than romantic pile, which I suppose is the real thing rather than some Gothicked-up fantasy.

Historically minded visitors will find it worth a quick stop. You can see where rooms once were, trace the outline of the original house, and imagine what life looked like centuries ago in rural Cheshire. It's the kind of place that rewards a bit of local knowledge - if you know the backstory, it comes alive; if you don't, it's just a rather battered old wall. Children might manage twenty minutes here before losing interest, unless you're the sort who can spin a decent yarn about Tudor life and ghosts.

Free to visit and takes roughly thirty minutes to potter about properly. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so come prepared. The real win is coupling it with a stay at Tipsy Tree Glamping a few miles away - gives you proper Cheshire countryside access whilst staying comfortable. Visit in decent weather; rain and muddy ground make it less appealing. November through February, when the land's wet and the light's thin, you might save it for another trip.
