Old Harry Rocks

The walk out to Old Harry Rocks from Swanage is what makes it worth doing. You're following the Jurassic Coast path, chalk cliffs rising on either side, and then suddenly you're staring at these two white stacks jutting out of the sea like broken teeth. One's called Old Harry, the other Old Harry's Wife - though she's considerably shorter these days after a collapse in 1896. The rocks themselves aren't massive, but they're dramatic, especially when the light's right and the sea's churning below.

It's a proper coastal walk rather than a leisurely stroll - count on ninety minutes return from central Swanage, and the path gets muddy and slippery after rain. The final section involves some steep climbing down and back up again, which older legs might find taxing. Kids will either love the adventure or complain relentlessly; there's no middle ground. The whole thing takes two to three hours if you're not rushing, and it's absolutely free.

Geologically speaking, the rocks tell the story of 65 million years of Earth's history - the Jurassic Coast isn't just marketing speak. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Ulwell Holiday Park or Swanage Bay View, this is a half-day outing that justifies the holiday on its own. Go on a clear day if you possibly can. On grey days it's just grey rocks and grey water.
