Old Hanging Wood

The woodland floor at Old Hanging Wood is soft with decades of leaf litter, and that's where you'll spend most of your time - just walking, really. It's a proper Buckinghamshire beech and oak forest near Rickmansworth, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Managed by the Woodland Trust, it's free to wander through, no ticket needed, and there's something refreshing about that simplicity.

The trees are mature and tall enough to create real shade even in summer, which makes it excellent for a midday walk when everywhere else is rammed with families. You're looking at an hour or so for a proper explore, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type who stops to identify fungi or just sits on a log watching the light change through the canopy. It's not dramatically scenic - no viewpoints or Instagram moments - but it's genuinely peaceful.

Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour; there's no playground or water feature to break things up. But walkers, bird watchers, and anyone after woodland peace will get proper value from it. The forest floor can be boggy in winter, so decent boots matter then.
