Old Bushmills Distillery

The smell hits you before you even step inside - warm grain, wood smoke, and something that reminds you why Irish whiskey tastes the way it does. Bushmills is the world's oldest licensed distillery, which means they've been at this since 1608, and you can tell they take the job seriously.

You get shown around the whole operation: the massive copper stills, the warehouses where the spirit sits for years getting properly interesting, and eventually you end up in the tasting room with a glass in your hand. The tour guides know their stuff and aren't afraid to admit when something tastes rough or when a particular release didn't quite work out. It takes about ninety minutes start to finish.

Historically minded visitors will find plenty to chew on - the place has survived Irish independence, Prohibition, a fire in 1885, and plenty of other drama. The river that powers the whole operation is still working away outside. Families with older kids will manage fine, though anyone under ten might find the finer points of fermentation a bit dry.
