Oilhouse Coppice

Walk into Oilhouse Coppice and you're stepping into proper woodland - the kind of place where the canopy blocks out most of the sky and the ground stays damp even after days without rain. It's a modest forest near Coalbrookdale in Shropshire, the sort of spot locals know well but visitors often miss entirely.

The woodland itself is straightforward enough: mixed trees, decent footpaths, and enough space to lose yourself for an hour or two without actually getting lost. There's no visitor centre, no facilities, no interpretation boards explaining the ecology. You just get woodland. For families, it works best if the kids are old enough to enjoy a walk without constant entertainment - under-fives will find it a bit dull after twenty minutes. Walkers, though, will appreciate it as a genuine escape from the industrial heritage sites that dominate the Coalbrookdale area.

The real draw is the contrast. You're minutes from the Ironbridge museums and the tourist infrastructure, yet Oilhouse Coppice feels genuinely removed from all that. It's free to access and you can spend as little or as long as you like here. Come in autumn when the light filters through differently, or early spring before everything becomes too lush.

If you're basing yourself at Irongorge Camping just down the road, or any of the other parks within a few miles, this is a sensible addition to your itinerary - somewhere to breathe and stretch your legs between more structured attractions. Not spectacular, but honest woodland walking.
