Ocknell Enclosure

You'll find Ocknell Enclosure tucked into the New Forest landscape near Lyndhurst, and it's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick tick-box visit. It's an old medieval deer park - a fenced area created centuries ago to keep livestock contained and wild animals out - and what makes it interesting is how you can still read the landscape like a history book. The earthwork banks that once formed the boundary are still visible, rising up from the forest floor in places, and there's something oddly moving about walking along ground shaped by medieval hands.

The enclosure itself is fairly open woodland, nothing dramatic, but that's precisely why it works. This is a place for walkers who actually enjoy thinking about what they're looking at, not just ticking off viewpoints. You can spend an hour here or three hours - depends whether you're the type to sit on a log and imagine Tudor hunting parties, or the type who prefers a brisk circuit. The nearest proper base is Longbeech Campsite just half a mile away, which makes it a natural pair with the broader New Forest exploring. Green Hill Farm Holiday Village is a bit further out at four miles but equally convenient.

There's no visitor centre, no signage really, no admission fee that I'm aware of - it's just landscape. That's either brilliant or a bit underwhelming, depending on your patience. Families with young children might find it dull; history types and serious walkers will find it compelling. Go when the light's low - early morning or late afternoon - and the shadows across those ancient banks become genuinely atmospheric.
