Oceanarium

You walk in expecting the usual aquarium fare and instead find yourself in front of a proper working sea-life rescue centre just outside Christchurch. The Oceanarium isn't massive - you can do it in an hour if you're rushing, but two hours is more realistic if you actually pause at the tanks. The big draw is watching rehab animals that are genuinely being cared for rather than just displayed. There are seahorses, rays, and various fish species in well-maintained tanks, but the real heart of the place is the rescue and education work happening behind the scenes.

Kids tend to lose interest after the first half-hour unless they're genuinely into marine life. Teenagers and adults who care about conservation get more from it. The staff are knowledgeable and will chat properly if you ask questions - not the usual rushed aquarium vibe.

It's open daily from 10am to 5pm, and while I can't confirm the exact admission price, it's reasonably priced for a specialist facility. The surrounding area isn't packed with attractions, which is partly the point - you're here for the animals, not the crowds.

If you're staying at Meadowbank Holidays or Sandhills Holiday Park for a broader Dorset park break, the Oceanarium makes a solid afternoon activity. It's close enough to base yourself locally and explore Christchurch's quieter corners, beaches, and river walks without feeling like you've driven miles for something half-hearted.
