Obelisk

The obelisk stands on high ground near Milton Keynes, a solitary stone shaft that catches you by surprise if you're walking these Northamptonshire lanes. It's not towering or particularly grand, but there's something about its simplicity that works - a 18th-century monument marking something long forgotten by most people passing through.

You'll want to allow twenty minutes to find it and poke around, longer if you're the type to sit and work out the local history from any plaques. It's the kind of thing walkers stumble upon and feel quietly pleased with themselves for discovering. The views across the countryside are decent enough, though nothing that'll take your breath away.

This isn't a destination in itself, but a cracking spot to add onto a ramble if you're camping in the area. Cosgrove Park sits just 3.4 miles away, making it a natural waypoint for a proper walk from your caravan. The Old Dairy Farm Camping is a touch further at 5.5 miles, but still within a couple of hours' marching. Both parks are decent bases for exploring the quieter bits of Northamptonshire, and having this obelisk on your route gives you a reason to get out of the field and stretch your legs.

Free to visit, obviously - there's nothing to stop you walking up to it. Best in clearer weather when you can actually see where you're going and appreciate the views properly.
