Walking into Oaken Dell feels like stepping back about fifty years - which, in a county increasingly swallowed by commuter sprawl, is rather refreshing. This is proper woodland, the kind with actual shade and actual peace, just east of Baldock where the Hertfordshire countryside still remembers how to be quiet.

The dell itself is a shallow valley thick with oak and beech, the ground soft with decades of leaf mould. There are a few informal paths, though nothing marked or particularly manicured. Treat it as a twenty-minute stop rather than a destination. If you're camping at Radwell Lake just down the road, it's worth knowing about for a morning wander before heading elsewhere.
