It's a proper working reservoir - built to supply the region - but that doesn't stop it being a genuinely peaceful spot for a walk. The Lower section is the more accessible of the two, and you can loop around much of it without scrambling or steep climbs, which makes it ideal if you've got kids in tow or just fancy an easy afternoon out.

The appeal here is understated. No visitor centre, no cafe, no crowds fighting for the best viewpoint. Just water, moorland, and the occasional heron if you're lucky. A straightforward walk takes about an hour, though you can easily spend longer pottering about. Spring brings the best birdwatching; summer's warm enough for a sit-down with a thermos.

If you're staying at Cote Ghyll just over a mile away, this is an obvious morning walk before breakfast. From Whorlton Pods or Hillside Caravan Park - both within five miles - you're looking at a short drive that beats fighting the crowds at more famous Yorkshire spots. Northallerton's close enough for supplies and lunch if you need it.

Honestly? Don't expect dramatic views or dramatic anything. But if you want to actually hear yourself think and see some decent water reflections without the tourist infrastructure, it delivers. The North Pennines feel remote up here, and this reservoir keeps that feeling alive.
