NWT Weeting Heath

The scrubland at Weeting Heath looks unremarkable at first - flat, sparse, dotted with low gorse and heather. But this National Wildlife Trust reserve near Brandon is one of East England's finest spots for seeing stone curlews, those impossibly camouflaged ground-nesting birds that locals once thought were extinct here. If you're there in spring or early summer and catch sight of one, you'll understand why birdwatchers get properly obsessed.

You walk across open heath on well-marked paths, occasionally spotting hides where serious twitchers camp out with binoculars. The landscape itself is what draws you in - vast, quiet, and genuinely wild for Suffolk. Even without stone curlews materialising, it's worth an hour wandering about. The visitor facilities are minimal (this is conservation first, tourism second), so bring water and sensible footwear.

Historically, this was Breckland heathland that nearly vanished under conifer plantations. The NWT's restoration work over decades means it's actually recovering proper character. Families with patience will manage it fine, though kids expecting ponds and playgrounds will be disappointed. Serious naturalists and walkers will find it absorbing.
