Nunnington Hall

The River Rye winds past this handsome Jacobean manor as if it's been doing so for centuries - and it pretty much has. Nunnington Hall sits just outside York, a proper country house that feels lived-in rather than museum-stiff. Inside, the rooms are properly furnished, and you get the sense the family might walk in any moment demanding tea. The panelled rooms and period furniture appeal most to folk who like their history tangible rather than behind velvet ropes.

The real draw is the grounds. A wander along the riverside is straightforward and calming, the sort of amble that clears the head without demanding fitness levels. There's a tea room if you need rescuing mid-visit, which is always a good sign. Families with younger children might find an hour enough - the house itself isn't vast and kids tire of period rooms quickly. But if you're the type to read every notice and examine the plasterwork, you'll spend a good two hours here without rushing.

Nunnington works brilliantly as a half-day addition to a park stay around Pickering or via Yorkshire Burrows. It's close enough to York that you could combine it with the city, but far enough away to feel like proper countryside. The house charges admission, though it's rarely expensive. Visit on a quieter weekday morning and you'll have the place nearly to yourself - weekends draw the coaches.
