The Heritage Centre sits on the Great Central Railway line and gives you a proper sense of how people actually got around the Midlands from the Victorian era onwards. You'll wander through vintage vehicles, some you can climb into, while volunteers potter about doing repairs in the workshops. It's genuinely absorbing if you're into industrial heritage; kids tend to get a kick out of sitting in old cab seats and pretending to drive, though two hours is usually enough before restlessness sets in.

The real draw is the narrow-gauge railway rides that run on certain weekends - you're trundling through the Nottinghamshire countryside on tracks that feel properly authentic rather than theme-park plastic. Admission is free to walk around the static displays, though rides cost extra and do sell out. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're serious about it; longer if you're waiting for a train departure.

It works well as a half-day stop when you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Wolds Wine Estate or Birdholme - both are just a short drive away. Combine it with a morning at the vineyard or a lazy afternoon back at camp, and you've got a decent day without overdoing it. Not groundbreaking, but a solid rainy-day option or a genuine treat if railways are your thing.
