Norton Common

Norton Common is a proper working nature reserve just east of Baldock, the sort of place that rewards a slow walk rather than a quick visit. You're moving through chalk grassland and scrub - habitat management that's genuinely impressive if you know what you're looking at. Butterflies are the main draw here, particularly in summer when the chalkhill blues are out. You'll also spot bird activity year-round, though it's quieter than some reserves.

It's a small reserve, so don't expect grand vistas. The paths are straightforward and flat, making it accessible for most abilities, though the terrain can be boggy after rain. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're just having a look around; longer if you're serious about spotting things. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared.

Families with older kids who like a bit of nature spotting will get more from this than very young children - there's not much to do besides walk and observe. It's the sort of reserve that appeals to local naturalists and people serious about butterflies rather than casual visitors.

If you're staying at Radwell Lake or Baldock Park Homes nearby, this makes a decent morning outing before heading elsewhere. It's not a destination in itself, but it slots nicely into a Hertfordshire park holiday when you want a bit of wildlife without the crowds you'd get at bigger reserves.
