Northcote Heavy Horse Centre

The Northcote Heavy Horse Centre sits just outside Skegness and is essentially a working farm where you get up close with some genuinely impressive carthorse breeds. We're talking Shires, Percherons, and other proper massive animals that most people only see in old photographs these days. You can watch them being worked, sometimes see demonstrations of how they were used historically, and the staff actually know their stuff about these creatures.

It's the kind of place where kids genuinely engage rather than shuffle past enclosures bored. Heavy horses have real presence - they're enormous and weirdly gentle, and watching a two-tonne animal move with that kind grace does something to you. If your family enjoys farms, traditional working animals, or anything beyond the typical zoo circuit, this delivers. Adults interested in agricultural heritage will find it properly interesting, not saccharine.

The whole experience doesn't demand hours of your time. Budget ninety minutes to two hours maximum, which makes it a solid add-on rather than a full day out. Clear your schedule if there's a working demonstration on, though - those are worth the wait.

Since you're camping at The Layby Lincs or one of the other nearby parks, this works brilliantly as a half-day excursion before heading back for an afternoon at the seafront or exploring the quieter corners around Skegness. Admission details are worth checking ahead, but for somewhere this local to the holiday parks, it's worth the short drive.
