Northaw Great Wood Country Park

The woodland around Northaw, just outside Hatfield, is proper ancient - you can feel it as soon as you step between those massive oaks and hornbeams. This is a country park that doesn't shout about itself, which is exactly why it works. You get proper forest walks here, the kind where you actually lose sight of houses and roads, even though you're nowhere near the middle of nowhere.

Walkers will get the most from it. The network of paths winds through mixed woodland with enough elevation changes to keep things interesting without being knackering. Bring wellies if it's been wet - the clay soil holds water something fierce. Allow a couple of hours for a decent circuit, or grab an hour if you're just stretching your legs between other things.

What you won't find is crowds or facilities. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no nonsense - just trees, paths, and the occasional glimpse of deer if you're lucky. In spring the bluebells are worth timing a trip for. Summer can get a bit muggy under all that canopy, so April through to October works best.

If you're staying at Marshmoor Crescent Park or one of the other caravan sites dotted round Hatfield, Northaw Great Wood is your go-to for a proper woods walk without driving miles. It's the sort of place that reminds you why England's green spaces matter. Not Instagram-ready, but genuinely restorative.
