North Plantation

There's something properly restorative about walking into North Plantation on a weekday morning when Market Rasen is still waking up. It's a working woodland - you'll spot the signs of active management, the coppiced sections, the cleared rides that let you see through the trees. Not the manicured forest park you might expect, but genuinely interesting if you know what you're looking at.

The plantation suits walkers most. The paths are straightforward enough, though muddy in winter, and there's enough space to loop around for 90 minutes to two hours without feeling repetitive. Families with young kids might find it a bit much - there's no café, no visitor centre, no obvious focal point. Older children who like spotting birds or collecting things will get more from it.

It's free to access and open year-round, though spring and early autumn are your best bets for wildlife and drier conditions. The woodland connects well with a few days based at Lincolnshire Lanes Camp, just 2.2 miles away - the glamp and log cabin site means you can walk off here in the morning and come back to something more comfortable than a tent.

Don't expect drama or distant views. What you get is peaceful, productive countryside and a proper sense of how English woodlands actually function rather than how we imagine them. Worth an afternoon if you're staying nearby, not worth driving miles out of your way for.
