North Philpstoun Bing

A former pit heap transformed into something worth climbing - that's North Philpstoun Bing in a nutshell. This artificial peak rises just outside Newbridge, west of Edinburgh, and on a clear day the views across the Lowlands are genuinely good. You're looking at maybe thirty minutes of steady walking to the top, nothing technical, just a proper little hike that feels more rewarding than the height suggests.

The bing itself is vegetation-covered now, which softens what was once raw industrial scar. The path is well-trodden and straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the ascent a bit relentless. Once you're up there, the landscape opens right out - you can see back towards Edinburgh on a decent day, and the surrounding moorland and farmland give you a real sense of the Lothians' rolling character.

It's free, naturally, and you can do it as a standalone walk or knit it into a larger route around the area. Timing-wise, allow an hour for the round trip if you're not stopping. The best light is late afternoon when the shadows get long across the hills.

If you're basing yourself at Linwater Caravan Park nearby, this makes an ideal afternoon sortie - close enough to pop out without eating the whole day, but substantial enough that you've actually done something. Not a must-do, but a proper local walk that beats spending another hour in the car looking for scenery.
