North Lagoon

The water at North Lagoon sits perfectly still most mornings, the kind of glassy surface that makes you want to just stand there for ten minutes doing nothing. It's a proper freshwater lake just outside Hoddesdon, the sort of place locals know but visitors often miss entirely.

You can walk the perimeter - takes about forty minutes at a leisurely pace - and there's decent birdwatching if you're into that. Herons, grebes, the occasional kingfisher if you're lucky. The banks are reedy in places, open grass in others, and it feels genuinely peaceful rather than manicured. Families with young kids will get a good hour or so out of it; teenagers might find it a bit slow unless they're the outdoorsy type. Anglers come here too, so you'll occasionally see someone casting from the bank.

There's no visitor centre or cafe that I'm aware of - just the water and the walking path - so bring what you need. Free to access, and the best time is early morning or late afternoon when the light's interesting and you won't be tripping over other people.

If you're staying at Hertford Camping and Caravanning Club Site nearby, this is worth a morning walk before breakfast. It's also close enough to fit into a bigger day exploring the River Lea valley. Not dramatic or showy, but that's rather the point. It's the kind of place that works precisely because nobody's tried to turn it into something it isn't.
