North Basin

A proper working reservoir rather than a tourist attraction, North Basin sits just inland from Hartlepool and delivers exactly what it promises - open water, decent walking routes, and the kind of peace you won't find on the seafront. The basin itself is industrial in origin, built to serve the town's water needs, but somehow that doesn't diminish it. You get a solid two-mile loop around the perimeter, which takes about forty minutes at a leisurely pace and gives you views across the water to the surrounding grassland.

It's ideal for walkers rather than swimmers - don't expect facilities or a café, though the terrain is flat and accessible enough for most people. Birdwatchers rate it highly, particularly in winter when migrating wildfowl pass through. Families with younger kids might find it a bit limited on novelty value; there's no adventure playground or visitor centre, just the walk itself.
