Norns Tump

You'll need decent boots and a proper sense of direction to find this one. Norns Tump sits tucked into the Gloucestershire countryside near Stroud, a Bronze Age burial mound that's been here for roughly 4,000 years - which rather puts our modern worries into perspective.

It's not a flashy attraction. What you get is a grass-covered earthwork, roughly conical, surrounded by fields and the gentle hills that make this part of the Cotswolds so quietly beautiful. The walk to reach it rewards you with actual countryside - no crowds, no gift shop, no admission fee as far as anyone knows. This is archaeology in its most honest form: you turn up, you have a look, you think about the people buried here millennia ago.

History types will find it genuinely compelling. Families with restless younger children might feel it's a bit thin on the ground as a standalone stop - you're not looking at an hour's entertainment. That said, if you're already rambling through the area, it's a worthwhile detour.

Staying nearby makes sense. Tobacconist Farm Campsite is just 1.6 miles away and rates brilliantly - proper camping that doesn't pretend to be luxury. Middle Lypiatt's glamping setup works if you want a touch more comfort while still being close to these quieter corners of Gloucestershire.

Go at dusk if you can. The light catches the mound differently, and you'll feel the age of the place more acutely when the day's starting to fade.
