Normanton Millenium Wood

A millennium project that actually delivered something worthwhile - Normanton Millennium Wood is a proper woodland walk rather than a manicured park affair. You get 40 acres of mixed woodland with a network of paths threading through, the sort of place where you can lose an afternoon without feeling like you've just wandered around a postage stamp. The woodland was planted specifically for the year 2000 celebrations, so it's still relatively young, but the mix of broadleaf and conifer means there's decent shelter and genuine character already.

What makes it work is simplicity. There are waymarked trails of varying difficulty - nothing mountaineering, but enough variation that families don't just shuffle around the same loop twice. The paths range from proper forest floor walks to clearer tracks where pushchairs would manage fine on a dry day. It's free to access, no visitor centre hassle, just turn up and walk. Allow 45 minutes to two hours depending on which route you fancy.

Best visited autumn through spring when the canopy's thinner and you're not battling through clouds of midges. Summer's fine but can feel a bit gloomy under the full leaf cover. Walkers and families after a proper leg-stretch will get the most from it - it's not a destination attraction where you spend a day, but it's absolutely worth the detour if you're based at The Paddocks Caravan Park or Mallory Meadows just down the road. Pairs nicely with a market town visit to nearby Leicestershire for lunch.
