Norfolk Wildlife Trust - Barton Broad

The broad itself is what draws you in - a proper expanse of open water fringed with reed beds that seem to stretch for miles. Barton Broad is Norfolk Wildlife Trust's crown jewel, and it's immediately obvious why once you're there. The wildlife watching is genuine. You'll spot reed warblers, marsh harriers, and on a good day, the occasional bittern if you're patient and lucky.

Walking the perimeter trails gives you different vantage points across the water, and the visitor facilities mean you're not roughing it. There's a tower hide that puts you at eye level with the reed beds - far better than peering through gaps in vegetation at ground level. Birdwatchers will camp here for hours. Families with younger kids might manage an hour or two before the novelty of staring at water wears thin, unless you're already keen on wildlife.

It's free to access, which is brilliant, though donations keep the trust running. Allow at least two hours if you're doing the main walk properly. Winter brings the migrant species; spring and early summer are peak for breeding birds. Summer can feel a bit quiet.

Great Yarmouth is just down the road, so it slots perfectly into a broader Norfolk break. Golden Beach Holiday Park is within striking distance if you're basing yourself locally. Combine it with other Broadland sites for a proper water-focused holiday. On its own, though, it's more for committed bird enthusiasts than casual visitors after a pleasant walk.
