Nineteen Acre Wood

A proper woodland walk through nineteen acres of mixed forest that feels genuinely off the beaten track for this part of Gloucestershire. The trees are dense enough that you forget you're only a short drive from Swindon, which is the nearest town if you need supplies or a decent cup of tea afterwards.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - it's just woodland, paths, and the occasional moment where you spot something worth stopping for. Walkers will get the most from it, especially if you've got decent boots and don't mind a bit of mud. Kids under ten might find it dull after twenty minutes unless they're the type who genuinely enjoy hunting for insects and climbing fallen logs.

You can walk it in anything from half an hour to two hours depending on how thorough you want to be and how muddy the ground is. The light filters through the canopy in a way that makes it worth visiting in late afternoon when the sun's lower. Winter's actually quite good here - fewer flies, clearer sightlines through the bare branches.

If you're based at Park Farm Campsite, Burton Hill, or any of the other parks dotted within five miles, this makes a solid morning or late-afternoon circuit without driving anywhere special. It's the kind of place you'd bundle into rather than plan your day around, but it delivers what it promises - actual woodland, properly quiet, and no entrance fee to pay.
