Ninesprings Park

The springs themselves are the real draw here - seven of them, actually, bubbling up from the chalk and creating a proper little wetland ecosystem right on Yeovil's doorstep. It's the sort of place that looks modest on arrival but rewards a proper wander. You'll find yourself on woodland paths where the ground squelches underfoot, past reed beds and open water that genuinely teems with life if you know what to look for. Dragonflies in summer, overwintering wildfowl from October onwards, and the whole thing has that green, damp, slightly wild feeling you don't expect from a town-edge nature reserve.

The park works brilliantly for a morning or early afternoon if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Swallowfield or Esme's Escape. Families with younger kids might get an hour out of it before the paths start to feel repetitive, but anyone with binoculars and a bird book could easily spend half a day here. It's free to wander around, though there's no formal visitor centre or facilities to speak of - bring your own water and waterproof shoes because after rain the place lives up to its name. The best time is spring when the migrating birds pass through, or early autumn when everything's still lush. Winter's peaceful too, just cold and muddy in equal measure. If you're combining it with a Dorset break, it's worth an hour detour from Yeovil, though it's not the sort of destination you'd travel miles for on its own.
