Newtongarry Wood

The woodland path at Newtongarry Wood starts gently enough, then steepens through tall Scots pines that block out most of the sky. It's a proper forest walk - the kind where you lose phone signal and remember why people bang on about fresh air. Near Huntly, this patch of Aberdeenshire woodland feels isolated despite being minutes from civilisation.

You're here for the walk itself rather than a destination - there's no visitor centre or café, just trees, birdsong, and the occasional muddy section that catches you out. The canopy is thick enough to keep things cool even on warm days, which matters if you're visiting in summer. Most people spend 45 minutes to an hour wandering the main paths, though you could stretch it longer if you're the type to sit still and stare at moss.

Families with young kids will manage fine as long as they're the sort who don't need constant stimulation. Older children might find it a bit dull after half an hour if they're not into nature. This is really walker territory - solo types, couples, maybe a dog owner or two.
