The abbey itself is the draw, obviously - Byron lived here, wrote here, probably brooded here in that dramatic way he had - but the grounds are what make you want to linger.

Walkers will find the paths genuinely pleasant rather than punishing. The woodland sections are proper atmospheric without being gloomy, and the lake offers decent views without requiring you to scramble up anything steep. History types will be in their element reading about the Augustinian canons who built the place, then Byron's ownership, then its descent into ruin before restoration. Families with younger kids might find it a touch quiet - it's not a playground sort of venue, more contemplative than that.

It's worth combining with a stay at Fairview Farm Log Cabins, just 2.4 miles away, which gives you somewhere comfortable to land after a few hours wandering the grounds. Head there mid-week if you can; weekends bring the crowds who are just ticking off a Nottinghamshire box. Allow at least two hours, three if you're actually reading the information boards. Lurcher Farm, five miles out, is another solid option if you prefer the caravan setup.
