Newhouse Wood

Newhouse Wood is a proper forest walk just outside Ross-on-Wye, the sort of place you'd stumble upon if you were exploring the backroads rather than following a guidebook. It's woodland in the truest sense - mixed trees, decent paths, and enough shade that even a July afternoon feels manageable. You're looking at a solid hour or so if you do the full circuit, less if you just want a quick stomp around.

The appeal here is straightforward. Walkers will find it's a genuine break from the rolling Wye Valley hills, with proper forest floor underfoot rather than yet another muddy field track. Families with school-age kids will get decent value - there's enough space to let them run ahead without losing sight of them entirely, and it's the kind of woodland that keeps children entertained without needing a visitor centre or café to sweeten the deal.

It's free, which helps. No car park fees, no entrance charges. Just turn up and walk. That said, you'll want to check conditions before you go - deep mud happens in winter, and the paths can get boggy after heavy rain.

If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Darnells' Farm or Greenacres, or camping at Haywood Farm, Newhouse Wood works as a morning activity before heading into Ross-on-Wye proper for lunch. It's close enough not to eat up your holiday time, but far enough from the tourist trail that it feels like you've actually discovered something rather than ticked a box.
