Newhaven Fort

You're standing inside a Victorian military fortress built in the 1880s to defend the Sussex coast from French invasion. The views across the water are genuine stunners - clear days get you sight lines to the French coast, which is exactly why the Victorians stuck it here.

Walking the ramparts takes about an hour if you dawdle, less if you're keen to move. The restored gun batteries and period rooms give you a proper sense of how crews actually lived and worked here - it's not fancy, but it's genuine. History enthusiasts will appreciate the detail; families with younger kids might find themselves done by lunchtime. There's not masses of interactive stuff, so it rewards either a focused interest or combining it with other Sussex attractions.

The fort sits just outside Newhaven town, making it an easy stop if you're based at Three Ponds Holiday Park nearby. The clifftop setting means decent walking potential along the coast either side. Admission and opening hours vary seasonally, so checking ahead saves a wasted trip. Best on a dry day - the ramparts can be slippery when wet, and the wind whips through properly in winter. For a coastal holiday combining outdoor walks and a bit of military history, it works well enough.
