Newhailes is a substantial country house that belonged to the Dalrymple family, and what strikes you immediately is how the National Trust for Scotland has kept it authentic. The rooms feel like people just stepped out for a walk - furniture's arranged naturally, the library's genuinely impressive, and there's none of that museum smell.

The gardens deserve equal billing. They're formal in places but pleasingly overgrown in others, with good mature trees and proper views across the Firth of Forth. If you've got a couple of hours, you can do the house and gardens without rushing. History buffs will spend longer poking through the library and the Dalrymple papers, but families with younger kids might find it a bit book-heavy and stationary.
