Newcastle's Castle

The keep stands squat and serious above Bridgend, a Norman fortress that's seen rather a lot of Welsh history unfold around it. Built in the 1090s, it's one of those castles that doesn't shout about itself - no soaring towers or dramatic ruins, just solid, purposeful stonework that's held its ground for nine centuries.

You'll spend maybe 45 minutes here if you're thorough, less if you're just after the views. The keep itself is the main event - you can walk around the base and get a proper sense of its defensive layout. The town has grown up around it, which means the setting feels lived-in rather than museum-like. That's either charming or a bit cluttered depending on your mood.

It's free to wander the grounds, which is handy. There's not much interpretation on site, so you might want to read up beforehand if the medieval backstory matters to you. Family groups with younger kids sometimes find it underwhelming - there's no interactive stuff, and after you've circled the keep twice, that's rather it.

If you're staying at Trecco Bay Holiday Park near Porthcawl, it's a straightforward 20-minute drive inland. It works as a quick stop between the seaside and exploring Bridgend proper, but I wouldn't plan a full day around it. Combine it with a walk through Bridgend town centre and you've got a solid couple of hours. The castle reminds you that this area's been important for centuries - worth that context, even if the remains themselves are modest.
