It's free to explore the exterior and grounds, which is the main draw - no charges, no visitor centre mucking about, just you and the fort. Plan on forty minutes if you're thorough, or twenty if you're just passing. The site itself is unfenced and accessible any time, though you won't get inside the buildings unless there's a special event on. Families with older kids who aren't bored by old fortifications will get something out of it; younger ones might find it a bit of a walk-round with limited action.
