New Pond

Water and woodland meet at New Pond, a quiet stretch just outside Henfield that feels properly removed from the South Coast sprawl. It's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - a modest lake ringed by trees, with paths that let you circle it without fuss. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; the pond attracts coots, mallards, and if you're lucky, the odd heron picking its way through the shallows.

The walk takes maybe thirty to forty minutes at a casual pace. It's flat, straightforward terrain - nothing taxing, which makes it ideal if you've got kids who need a break from hiking boots and proper hills. There's space to sit and do nothing much, which honestly is half the appeal. The water's too cold and murky for swimming, and there's no café or facilities tucked away, so come prepared with a thermos if you're planning to linger.

Walkers will find it a useful leg-stretcher between exploring the wider Sussex countryside. It slots in well with a stay at any of the nearby parks - Raylands Country Park and Blacklands Farm are both within four miles, so you could easily tack it onto a longer day out. Knepp Wildland Safaris, further afield at 5.7 miles, offers something more structured if you want guided wildlife spotting elsewhere.

New Pond won't set your heart racing, but that's rather the point. It's free, it's there, and on a grey Sussex afternoon it's a perfectly decent way to get some air and stretch your legs.
