The New Horizon Christian Centre sits on the outskirts of Alfreton, a working-class town that doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't. It's a modern evangelical church - all glass frontage and contemporary design rather than Victorian stone and stained glass - which means if you're expecting the kind of building that photographs well for a weekend break, you might be disappointed.

That said, if you're travelling with the family and want to catch a Sunday service while staying at Golden Valley Caravan and Camping Park or Riddings Wood, it's accessible and reasonably welcoming to visitors. The congregation tends to be younger and more informal than traditional Anglican parishes, and there's usually a children's programme running during services. The coffee and chat afterwards can be surprisingly decent.

It's not really a tourist attraction in the conventional sense - you're not going to spend an afternoon here. The building's functional rather than beautiful, and the location is distinctly unglamorous, surrounded by the industrial heritage that defines this part of the East Midlands.
