Nettleton Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured tourist spot, Nettleton Wood sits just outside Market Rasen and feels genuinely removed from the Lincolnshire flatlands you'd expect. The trees here are dense enough that you lose sight of the surrounding countryside within minutes - oak and beech mostly, with decent coverage underfoot that's soft in winter and pleasantly cool in summer.

It's the sort of place where you'll actually want to slow down. Paths wind through without too much faffing about, and there's enough canopy to make it worth visiting even on a damp day. Kids will get decent mileage from it - mud, sticks, the occasional stream to peer into - though it's not a destination in itself. More of a two-hour job than a full afternoon.

If you're based at Station Farm Caravan and Camping Site, barely a mile down the road, this becomes your go-to break from the caravan. Wolds View Country Park sits just 2.3 miles away if you want something with more facilities. The woodland doesn't charge admission as far as anyone can tell, and there's no visitor infrastructure, so bring what you need.

Best visited autumn through spring when the undergrowth isn't quite so enthusiastic and you can actually see where you're walking. Summer crowds shouldn't be an issue here - most people stick to the honey-pot attractions nearer the coast. It won't blow your mind, but it's genuinely useful if you're exploring the Wolds and need a proper stretch of the legs.
