Nettlebed Common Wood

A proper woodland walk between Watlington and Nettlebed, this place feels like you've stumbled into someone's back garden - in the best way. The Common Wood isn't manicured or managed to death. You'll find yourself on narrow paths threading through dense beech and oak, with the forest floor thick enough that your footsteps barely make a sound.

It's ideal for families who don't mind a bit of mud, walkers after something short but atmospheric, and anyone after a break from the rolling Chilterns views. The wood itself is unremarkable on paper - no grand vistas, no woodland sculpture trail, just trees being trees. But that's precisely what makes it work. You can wander for a good hour without seeing another soul, which feels increasingly rare these days.

The paths are well-enough trodden that you won't need a map, though it does help to know the main entrances. There's no visitor centre, no café, no signage to speak of. Free, obviously, and open whenever you fancy turning up. Autumn is the time to visit - the canopy drops enough light to actually see where you're going, and the leaf litter smells as it should.

From Cholsey Grange CL nearby, it's a decent morning excursion before tackling the Chilterns proper. Not a destination in itself, but a genuine bonus if you're base camping locally.
