Needs Law sits just south of Hexham, a proper fell walk rather than a casual stroll. The summit isn't dramatic - more a gentle, grassy dome - but the 350-metre climb rewards you with unobstructed views across the Tyne Valley that stretch for miles in good weather.

Walkers will find the ascent straightforward enough, taking the better part of an hour depending on fitness and pace. The terrain is open moorland, windswept and honest. There's nothing fancy here - no trig point, no crowds, no café waiting at the top. You get space and silence instead, which sounds daft but becomes precious the moment you reach it.

What makes it worth doing is the sheer accessibility from Hexham. You're not driving hours to a famous peak; this is a lunchtime mission. The fell sits alongside broader Pennine walking routes if you want to string a longer day together, or it works as a standalone leg-stretcher before heading down to Kielder Campsite, just 5 miles south. That's useful if you're based there and fancy breaking up a camping weekend with some proper hillwork.

Best avoided in proper weather - wind up here in a gale and you'll regret it. Spring and early autumn are ideal. Bring decent boots because it can turn boggy after rain. Free to access, obviously. The whole experience - parking, walking, sitting about at the top - takes two to three hours maximum. Not Instagram-famous, but that's rather the point.
