Needle Hill

The walk up Needle Hill from Dunbar takes about forty minutes, and on a clear day you'll understand why locals bother. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the Highlands - but the views across the Firth of Forth and back towards the town are genuinely worth the leg work. The path is straightforward enough, though it gets a bit muddy after rain and the final stretch is steeper than it looks from below.

This is one for walkers rather than casual strollers. You won't find a café at the top or much in the way of facilities, just open Scottish Lowland countryside and the sort of view that makes you appreciate why people settle on this coast. Kids aged eight and up will manage it fine, though younger ones might struggle with the climb. On weekends it gets busier than you'd expect for such a modest hill.

If you're staying at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park just down the road, it's an obvious half-day excursion. Combine it with a walk around Dunbar itself - the harbour and old town are worth an hour - and you've got a proper morning sorted. The peak itself is free to access, naturally, and there's no charge to park at the trailhead either.

Timing matters here. Avoid midday if the sun's strong, because there's zero shelter once you're up there. Early morning or late afternoon suits it better, and you'll avoid the school-holiday crowds.
