Near Black Hill

Black Hill rises above the Pennine moorland near Kirkby Stephen with stubborn, windswept character. This isn't a gentle stroll - it's proper upland walking that demands respect, especially when the weather turns. The ascent is steep in places, rewarding you with views that stretch across the Eden Valley and into the Lake District fells beyond.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a casual family amble, though capable teenagers with decent boots won't struggle. Allow two to three hours for the round trip from the nearest parking, depending on your fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. The moorland terrain is classic Pennines - heather, grass, and the occasional scramble over rough stone.

Timing matters here. Early morning light hits the valley properly, and you'll avoid crowds (such as they are). Spring and autumn are ideal. Winter can be treacherous with ice underfoot.
